As much as I like to try new things in the kitchen, lately I’ve been succumbing to summertime simplicity. We’re eating well, but my efforts haven’t exactly been innovative, and I know that the basic foods we’ve been thriving on are just too boring to blog about (nobody needs me to tell them how to make tacos, for real). But this – antioxidants and omega 3s, whipped into something that tastes like a fruity chocolate milkshake? – thankfully, it’s both a new flavor and a total no-brainer.
I’m a big fan of hemp – it appeals to my classic hippie sensibilities, of course, and it’s also a nutritional wonder! Hemp seeds are high in fiber, rich in omega 3s, and they’re even a complete protein (soy and quinoa are the only other plants that can make this claim).
Just to be clear, although the plants look nearly identical, hemp is marijuana’s THC-free cousin. Nothing wacky about it! Unfortunately, hemp products tend to be expensive in the US due to the senseless laws regulating its cultivation – we’ve historically been forced to import all hemp from Canada, where it’s legal to grow. The most recent revision of the Farm Bill may take us a step closer to domestic crops, but solid progress remains to be seen.
The hemp source in this smoothie is hemp milk, which is made by soaking and straining hemp seeds (just like with soy or almond milk). The hemp and flaxseed meal make it a double dose of anti-inflammatory omega 3s, and the blueberries and cocoa have all kinds of antioxidants. It’s a good thing!
By the way, if you think my summertime simplicity routine involves scrubbing a blender pitcher, you’re way off. Mason Jar Magic Bullet, people!
And, oh yeah, I should probably mention that this smoothie is completely delicious. Hemp has a really distinct nutty flavor, which I love. I’m struggling to find a better way to describe this than a hempy, fruity, chocolate milkshake… but honestly, I’m also having trouble thinking of anything more appetizing than a hempy, fruity chocolate milkshake. Just trust me!
