It’s that time of year again, when our grocers’ produce sections pile up with bags and crates of juicy little clementines. In the past I had never fully jumped on the mini-mandarin bandwagon, but this season… I’m in deep. Maybe I’m homesick for Florida, or maybe my body wants vitamin C, but every time I open the fridge I feel the siren song of the bright orange bag. They’re so easy to eat out of hand, but I felt compelled to give them some special attention and try something different… to mix it up, if you will? (smoothie humor… yeah, sorry.)
I know winter isn’t prime time for frozen drinks, but I’ve been craving smoothies recently. After a run, it’s all I want! I don’t normally drink a lot of them, but sometimes I get into a habit. It’s definitely an easy way to sip on nutrient-dense foods with minimal effort. This recipe in particular is PACKED with vitamins and antioxidants from frozen mixed berries and our citrus superstars. My only complaint is that it’s a little seedy, from the blackberries and raspberries, but when drinking through a straw it’s not too much grief. I’m willing to endure a few seeds for the mega nutrition and tart sweetness, but next time I might go heavier on the blueberries.
This was my first time adding fresh citrus to a smoothie, and I think clementines are the perfect way to do it – the juicy, seedless segments blend in seamessly. I wasn’t sure if the almond milk base might clash with the citrus, but it ended up creating a subtle creamsicle experience. Highly recommend!
